Clifford Chance

Lawyer for the English Law Capital Markets practice in Madrid

Job Details

We are seeking to recruit an excellent junior to mid-level English law-qualified Solicitor to join our English law Capital Markets practice in Madrid.

Clifford Chance offers you a unique opportunity to develop a professional career in an international law firm that has been a relevant player in the Spanish market for 38 years with one of the top Capital Markets practices in the country.

The Work

The English law Capital Markets team in Madrid covers a broad array of international capital markets work, including both debt and equity offerings. The practice is a leader in debt securities issues, with a diverse product range that includes high yield bonds, US private placements, convertible and exchangeable bonds, hybrid capital issues, secured bonds, structured products, medium term notes, euro commercial paper programmes and liability management.  The practice has also been at the forefront of some of the most innovative equity and equity-linked transactions in recent years, including Criteria's exchangeable bond offering (exchangeable for shares in Cellnex), the first yieldco IPO in Europe, CEPSA's planned flotation and the Spanish government's purported floatation of the state lottery business. The team's clients comprise leading global financial investors, insurance companies, financial institutions as well as Spain's largest corporates.

This position entails a high degree of autonomy and responsibility, with  regular client contact and participation in some of the most ground-breaking and innovative international and multidisciplinary deals in Spain.

The Team

Our English law team in our Spanish offices (together with our Corporate and Banking and Finance practices) actively participates in some of the most significant, complex and challenging transactions in the Iberian peninsula, and is widely recognised as market leader.

Chambers & Partners Europe Guide 2021 contains the following client quotes: "In cross-border matters, we receive the same quality in all jurisdictions involved and the result from one source. This enables us to extract all the information we need from one document without further work". "The firm is present all over Europe, which makes the work of coordination easier". The Guide also indicates that, according to clients, Eduardo García, the Capital Markets overall practice area leader, is recognised as a market leader and “has a broad practice that encompasses both the underwriting of investment-grade or high-yield bonds and the securitisation of consumer loan portfolios”, whilst Antonio Henriquez, the partner that heads the English law team recognised as a market leader "has a really good understanding of the market standard" and is able to "introduce those market standards into the documentation on any specific deal".

Skills and Qualifications

We would like to hear from outstanding junior to mid-level lawyers qualified to practice English law, who have acquired between 2 and 5 years' post-qualification experience (PQE) of capital markets work, preferably with one of the top London law firms, who relish the prospect of moving to Madrid and forming part of our growing English law team of our prestigious Capital Markets practice within a truly international working environment.

Whilst your first language should be English, it would be ideal if you have at least a very basic understanding of Spanish and are prepared to develop your proficiency in this skill.

You should have a strong academic record and first-class legal and drafting ability, excellent analytical, transaction management and organisational skills and be a persuasive written and oral communicator. You should also be able to show an awareness of the commercial environment within which the Firm and its clients operate, a willingness to proactively review service levels and the ability to promote the Firm to clients.

You will join a friendly, informal and meritocratic office, so we are looking for people that are flexible and creative in their approach and excellent team-players, capable of developing constructive working relationships with colleagues and contributing enthusiastically, confidently and effectively in group situations and discussions.

What are we Offering You?

If successful in your application you will receive a competitive salary and benefits package and, if you are currently based outside Spain, assistance with relocating to Madrid.

In addition, we offer you first class training and development opportunities to help you perform your job effectively and grow your career with the firm.
