Applied Researcher

Advertising is one of the fastest growing areas in eBay which in some ways, will define the future of eBay. Digital advertising as an industry is growing rapidly, and the landscape is shifting as e-commerce advertisers are finding better value with e-commerce companies like eBay. As they shift budget from the duopoly of Google and Facebook, it creates a huge opportunity for eBay. Advertising is also amplifying eBay’s e-commerce by providing a tool for our sellers to move inventory and for buyers, by surfacing high quality items.

About the Team

Our Merchandising and Advertising team works on delivering recommendations at scale and in near real time to our buyers on our website and native apps. We work on hard data science, engineering and UX challenges across the entire recommendation's workflow - from selecting and ranking the most relevant listings to recommend from eBay’s inventory of over 1 billion live listings based on the user’s implicit shopping intent and context, to delivering and rendering them on eBay’s web pages and native apps using appropriate user interfaces. Recommendations are a core part of how our buyers navigate eBay’s vast and varied inventory. The sponsored recommendations product is growing rapidly as a channel for our sellers to drive sales velocity by promoting their listings.

About the Role

We are building a state-of-the-art near real time deep learning retrieval system. We are looking for an applied researcher who will build the next generation deep learning models that will power and improve personalized recommender systems at eBay scale. We are a combined machine learning and production engineering team, so we make sure the models we develop are fully scalable to eBay’s global traffic. The candidate for this role will develop the core text based deep learning models used to generate recommendations for eBay users.

We are looking for passion for deploying reliable and efficient machine learning solutions to production at scale. You will collaborate with other researchers and engineers to invent, design and implement end-to-end reliable, scalable, efficient production services in Scala/Java, and Python (or similar languages), using state-of-the-art deep learning and machine learning methods.

The ideal candidate will have a blend of science and engineering skills, a proven track record of solving critical business problems through deep learning modeling and strong analytical/quantitative and engineering skills. The candidate will be expected to have strong communication skills and to be capable of cross-group collaborations.
