Job Description

Specific Responsibilities and Skills for Position:

Executive Director, Outsourced MFG, will lead the organization in continued growth by ensuring an un-interrupted supply of drug substances. The primary goal of this position is to oversee the Sales and Operations planning for API and coordination in its use in DP manufacturing. This will also include inventory management including setting up a inventory review board governance.  The preferred candidate will be an experience managing, training and mentoring staff.

Essential Functions:

  • Creates and implements supply chain analytics, planning, and resilience processes and policy across the global supply chain for Gilead’s drug substances at all stages of the product lifecycle
  • Performs risk-based review of the supply chain in order to determine appropriate inventory levels of API
  • Delivers a response plan for disruptive challenges such as accidents, natural disasters, extreme weather, geopolitical hazards, transportation disruption, and IT failures. Ensures that the plan and capabilities of each supplier are adapted, validated, and in place to minimize the risk of disruption and deliver an effective response to threats and hazards
  • Contributes to vendor and supplier selection, as well as suitable volume determination, based on the risk-minimization analysis
  • Ensures suitable quality, optimal economics, and adequate supply chain security
  • Participates in the preparation of multi-year manufacturing plans and collaborates with manufacturing managers to appropriately balance production across the core CMO network
  • Collaborates with line management on strategic planning for the group
  • Maintains documentation and publishes metrics to reflect the effectiveness and efficiency of department activities
  • Interacts frequently with functional peer group managers. Interactions normally involve matters between functional areas, other company divisions or units, or suppliers
  • Enhances a risk-intelligent enterprise culture at Gilead by implementing risk-mitigation planning for supply chain management for drug substance manufacturing. Leads the design and implementation of training and awareness programs on business continuity, disaster preparedness, and related concepts

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:

  • Expertise and track record in MFG and supply chain execution and oversight
  • Expert people and project manager
  • Expert in standing up a formal S&OP process
  • Expertise and proven track record in supply chain risk management. Possesses in-depth knowledge of industry and system best practices
  • Work experience in a regulated industrial setting. Solid knowledge of worldwide regulatory requirements
  • Experience and/or working understanding and application of manufacturing principles governed by current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).
  • Solid understanding of the CMO landscape, knowledge of CMO capabilities and limitations for worldwide drug substance manufacturing is a plus.
  • Strong communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills a must. 
  • Ability to travel internationally, including overnight up to 10% of the time is required
  • Able to effectively manage multiple priorities for success
  • Possesses understanding and application of principles, concepts, practices, and standards for Drug Substance manufacturing in the pharmaceutical industry
  • Possesses a solid working knowledge of relevant regulatory guidance, including pharmaceutical GMPs and ICH guidance
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to interact effectively with senior management
  • 20+ years of progressively responsible experience in a related field, including outsourced manufacturing, supply chain management and risk management and a BA or BS degree in Economics or a STEM discipline.
  • An MBA degree can be substituted for 2 years of relevant experience.
