Job Description

Specific Responsibilities:

Gilead’s Corporate Legal Group is seeking a Contracts Specialist who thrives in a high-volume, fast-paced, high-performing and collaborative corporate environment. This individual will work within Gilead’s Corporate Contracts Group, which is responsible for the review, negotiation and management of a variety of agreements that Gilead enters into throughout the ordinary course of business. This individual will work report to the Head of Clinical Legal and support other attorneys in the broader Corporate Legal Group to facilitate the timely review and completion of a high volume of agreements.

Responsibilities include:

  • Review and negotiate day-to-day Company agreements including clinical trial related agreements, confidentiality, consulting and miscellaneous vendor agreements for a broad range of clients.
  • Draft, review and negotiate these agreements, handling all routine issues and consulting with attorneys in the group when complex legal questions arise.
  • Ability to quickly understand the business objectives of a transaction, identify legal issues, and facilitate a risk/benefit analysis.
  • Ability to absorb information quickly and produce accurate work product in a timely manner.
  • Ability to multi-task, be comfortable working within tight deadlines, and follow up with, and assist business owners to resolve issues and ensure completion of contracts.
  • Ability to interact effectively and comfortably with all levels of management within the legal department and the business.
  • Maintain the status of the agreements in the tracking system and regularly communicate status of such agreements to the appropriate client group.

Essential Duties and Job Functions:

This position is responsible for negotiating, drafting and finalizing agreements in support of Gilead’s business and consistent with Gilead’s contracting standards. Responsibilities include interfacing with both in-house client groups and outside vendors & partners in connection with domestic agreements that require legal support. The individual in this position will work in an integrated team environment within Gilead's Corporate Legal Group.

  • Solid grasp of contracting concepts and strong analytical skills.
  • Strong internal and external negotiation skills and ability to influence.
  • Well-developed organizational & prioritization skills.
  • Ability to distill objectives into a set of actionable activities.
  • Exemplary personal and professional integrity and positive attitude.
  • Must have the ability to solve problems and use good business judgment.
  • High level of enthusiasm, personal sense of urgency and capacity to overcome obstacles.
  • Ideal candidate should be proactive and confident with excellent intrapersonal skills.
  • Flexible team player who thrives in environments requiring the ability to effectively juggle multiple concurrent projects and a willingness to learn new processes and skills sets.
  • A Bachelor’s degree is preferred with a minimum 4 years of relevant experience required.
  • Experience should include drafting and negotiating contracts in a bio-pharma or high-tech company.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to perform in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
  • The ability to multi-task and handle multiple contract negotiations simultaneously.
  • A thorough understanding of the contract process including contract evaluation and negotiation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with other departments within Gilead.
  • Excellent attention to detail, and proficient in MS Office and document comparison programs.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
