Job Description

Maintenance Technician II (Metrologist)

Gilead in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is seeking a motivated, professional, and experienced individual to assume the role of Metrologist in Gilead’s Maintenance and Engineering department. Gilead is the largest pharmaceutical laboratory facility in Edmonton and houses a diverse range of analytical testing equipment.  The modern laboratories contain hundreds of state-of the-art instruments, and the site Metrologists are the primary support group for this instrumentation.

The ideal candidate has a strong technical background, pays close attention to detail, and understands the details of working within a regulated environment.   The Gilead Metrology group provides technical and administrative support for all scientific instrumentation at the site, so there is a strong focus on providing excellent customer service to all instrumentation users at the site.  Addressing concerns, ensuring timely communication, and taking custody of issues in a professional and courteous manner are all critical for this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Performing routine calibrations, qualifications, preventative maintenance, and repairs on various analytical laboratory equipment including, but not limited to: HPLC, GC, MS, NMR, particle sizers, SEM, UV/Vis, FTIR, meters, titrators, balances, and other instrumentation.
  • Supporting installation of new equipment and performing testing according to written protocols.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment and software problems. Properly documenting solutions and follow-up actions.
  • Sending select equipment offsite for external calibration or repair; initiating purchase requisitions as necessary.
  • Management of external contractors, including completion of training records, work permits, system entries, documentation review, and general support duties.
  • Maintaining the Metrology documentation library, including calibration and maintenance records, as well as new equipment documentation.
  • Use various software platforms including Maximo database to update equipment records, enter logbook information, and process work orders.
  • Metrology parts and supplies inventory management, including maintenance and calibration of standards, and organization and update of all metrology inventory.
  • Writing and editing procedures and qualification protocols.  Performing regular documentation reviews and audits.
  • Adhering to established practices, policies, and procedures in a regulated laboratory environment.
  • Providing general administrative support for quality systems, such as records archiving, review, and auditing.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills

  • A post-secondary diploma or degree, with a preference of Chemistry, Instrumentation, or general science.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience, with preference to laboratory environment.
  • Work experience in a regulated laboratory under GMP or GLP guidelines.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audience.
  • Knowledge of maintenance systems, database systems, methods and procedures.
