Job Description

Gilead’s therapeutic areas of focus include HIV/AIDS, liver diseases, cancer and inflammation, and serious respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.

Specific Responsibilities and skills for Position:

We are seeking a highly talented and motivated Bioinformatics Scientist to support drug discovery and development efforts in virology cure programs.  The candidate will work in a highly productive team environment in collaboration with other Gilead Research functions to create data analysis tools for investigation of viral and immunological drug targets.  The individual will collaborate with Biologists and other Bioinformatics Scientists on projects to explore viral sequencing, viral evolution and diversity, host immune datasets, and responses to biologics and vaccines. 

Required Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • Thorough understanding and interest in biology with the demonstrated ability to contribute to scientific efforts focused on understanding diseases
  • Excellent background in next-generation sequencing data analysis
  • Strong programming and scripting abilities in languages such as Python, C++, C#, Java
  • Knowledgeable in one or more analysis tools/statistical packages such as R, SAS, Matlab
  • Experience with open-source bioinformatics tools / packages (GATK, Bioconductor, etc)
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Desired Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:

  • Knowledge of immuno-informatics tools and datasets
  • Experience in database design and writing queries for SQL and document databases
  • Experience evaluating genetic variation in populations using phylogenetics

Specific Education and Experience:

  • A PhD in bioinformatics, computer science, computational biology, genomics, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience with MS degree in a related scientific discipline.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in genomic data analysis
  • Proficient in at least one of following programming languages: using JAVA,C, C++, Python, R and Shell in a Linux environment.
  • Experience in GUI development and data visualization is a plus
  • Experience in relational databases and SQL is a plus
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience with Linux/Unix platforms and high-performance computing environment
  • 3+ years of experience with statistical analysis of genomics data using R and Bioconductor
