Specific Responsibilities:

The Biomarker Sciences department is driving within Research the analysis of genomic/biomarker-EMR data sets for both biomarker and research-based aims and is seeking an experienced epidemiologist to lead this exciting effort. The individual will have experience in analysis of electronic health record data and a background or related experience in genomics or biomarker work. This role will support not only efforts in Biomarker Sciences for biomarker and population –related analyses, but more broadly support and advise Research on target identification/verification. The role will span multiple therapeutic areas and access both internal and external datasets (public and collaborative agreements) and leverage data analytic partners (internal and external) where necessary in support of these aims.

Biomarker Sciences is responsible for biomarker work across all therapeutic areas at Gilead from preclinical assessment throughout all phases of clinical development and commercialization. The department also leads partnered diagnostic programs. Gilead is a highly matrixed organization and the ability to work effectively across diverse stakeholders is a key attribute for this role.

  • Lead cross-functional teams to develop and oversee biomarker/molecular epidemiology studies
  • Promote effective knowledge management  and staff recruitment, development, coaching, mentoring and performance management
  • Communicate the value of the combined analyses of health record, genomic and biomarker related datasets within Gilead and provide expert interpretation to the leadership team to inform strategy and portfolio decisions
  • Integrate data from health records and biomarker/genomic/other datasets in specific disease areas to gain deeper insight into patient subpopulations enabling an integrated biomarker strategy and/or target/biomarker discovery or verification.
  • Provide expertise to research and development teams to ensure access to state of the art thinking on appropriate use of biomarker/molecular epidemiological data sources, evaluating clinical applicability and any technical or statistical issues related to use of such data and their combination with other datasets.
  • Design studies utilizing health records; is accountable for the effective identification and utilization of datasets (health records, genomic, biomarker-related) to generate insights that can be leveraged in drug discovery and novel target identification, as well as replication and determination of clinical utility
  • Establish collaborations with internal and external academic or industry based experts and providers to initiate epidemiological/biomarker/genomic studies related to understanding the disease pathogenesis, characterizing disease(sub)populations and predicting treatment response
  • Design, present to and participate in Advisory Boards and key opinion leaders (KOL) meetings as needed
  • Proactively provides expert advice through team leadership or other active team participation to medical affairs and commercial teams in connection with the launch and commercialization of pharmaceuticals if appropriate datasets could be informative
  • Provide expert advice to pharma partnering teams in connection with business deals involving drug candidates; may act as a spokesperson, internal consultant, or advisor to top management on the use of biomarker/epidemiological data (health records, etc) on corporate research and development direction

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 15+ years of epidemiological and/or  combined experience with biomarker/genomics data analysis experience with PhD, MD or MD/PhD in related scientific discipline
  • MS or BS degree with extensive demonstrated epidemiological experience in the pharma industry and/or academia.
  • Consistent success in independently leading and conducting epidemiological research of large datasets
  • Recognized expert in the analysis of complex datasets
  • Expertise in the analysis of large datasets to enable human translational research and awareness of the limitations and challenges of working with these datasets to advance scientific knowledge
  • Ability to establish productive collaborations with internal stakeholders, external investigators and corporate partners as a team leader
