Job Description

Sr. Automation Engineer II

Gilead Sciences is currently seeking a Senior Automation Engineer II for the Biologics Development and Manufacturing site in Oceanside, CA.  This position will provide technical leadership and expertise to the Automation Engineering Group, and will focus on support of instrumentation and control systems for process, utility, and building systems.

Essential Functions:

  • Leads project budgets and organizes resources according to team priorities and customer needs.
  • Contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques, and standards.
  • Ensures solutions are consistent with organization objectives.
  • Provides leadership and direction to engineers and contractors.
  • Provides expert project management skills and experience.
  • Leads programs and processes to ensure high quality of operations, equipment maintenance, and compliance with codes, Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs)
  • Interacts with contractors and/or vendors on routine machinery and equipment administration matters.
  • May hire, train, evaluate, and review personnel.
  • Ensures GMP training of all employees.
  • Leads department operational areas.
  • Leads multiple projects of significant complexity and risk. Leads machinery and equipment maintenance and operations functions.
  • Evaluates design processes to modify machinery and equipment; approves estimated cost and designs layouts.
  • Ensures that team personnel are trained and developed to meet changing company needs

Additional responsibilities:

  • Serves as a role model for strong people and project leadership through actions, decisions and directing others.
  • Serves as the main point of contact for cross-functional integration and consults on enhancements or future integrations.
  • Acts as an escalation point for non-routine function issues/decisions.
  • Directs the development of strategic function programs/initiatives, determines metrics for program success, and evaluates performance against metrics.
  • Analyzes industry trends and anticipates changes in the competitive or regulatory landscape to adjust plans as appropriate.
  • Serves as team representative in strategic planning and operating discussions with senior leadership.
  • Operations Management, Strategic Management, Manufacturing Management training/knowledge
  • Advanced leadership skills
  • Budget analysis and management of project budgeting
  • Project management including process improvements such as Six Sigma/Kaizen
  • Manufacturing, Engineering Services, Quality, Materials, Technical Services, Validation

Desired Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of hands-on programming experience with Emerson DeltaV or Allen-Bradley PLC required
  • Working knowledge of digital instrumentation and bus technologies (Fieldbus, DeviceNet, Profi-bus etc.)
  • Practical knowledge of PID control theories, advanced S88 programming techniques with Class Based approach utilizing Control Modules and Equipment Modules for batch execution. 
  • Practical experience with control system interfaces including OPC, Ethernet, etc.
  • Practical knowledge of clean room or classified area design or requirements.
  • Change control and Validation experience related to control and computer systems.
  • Familiarity with BAS/BMS Systems, DeltaV Batch, Factory Talk Batch and OSI Pi Historian is a plus.
  • Practical experience preforming system administration of process control systems including planning and execution of preventative maintenance annually.
  • Demonstrated ability to define requirements, develop conceptually design, scope and project manage complex Automation projects.  Both upgrade of legacy systems and new application installations is desired.
  • Demonstrated the ability to make edits and development new Standard Operating Procedures and work instructions associated with Automation Control Systems. 

Required Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:

  • 8+ years of relevant experience and a BS or BA or related fields.
  • 6+ years of relevant experience and a MS, MA or MBA.
  • Has previous experience in biotech or pharmaceuticals industry.
  • Has previous experience in engineering in highly regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Demonstrates extensive understanding and application of process engineering principles, concepts, and practices, and standards.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and safety regulations.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Demonstrates expertise in project management
