Title: Sustainability Health and Safety Senior Program Manager

Job description:

The role of SH&S Senior Program Manager is to provide safety engineering expertise and support to the Pharmaceutical Development & Manufacturing (PDM) groups such as Process Chemistry, Analytical Operations and Formulations groups at the Gilead, Foster City campus.  The successful candidate will use effective time management skills with minimal supervision on projects of moderate to challenging complexity.  This will include identification, development, update and maintenance of compliance and safety programs, protocols, and procedures in collaboration with research and development staff. The SH&S Senior Program Manager explains information and influences others and ensures successful implementation of programs and directives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide safety engineering expertise and support to the Process Chemistry, Analytical Operations, and Formulation groups, along with associated Pilot Labs.

• Evaluate options to integrate best practices components of Process Safety Management to the Potent Compound Safety Management Program.

• Support efforts to improve safety and performance of current and new manufacturing processes from planning stages through daily operations.

• Support process safety transfer between scales (from lab to pilot scale).

• Create and review documentation, including protocols, reports, manufacturing process instructions and standard operating procedures.

• Perform Injury and Illness investigations, root cause analysis, data trending, program audits and laboratory safety and compliance inspections. Present findings and recommendations to management while ensuring alignment on action plans.

•Provide general and program specific SH&S training.

• Serve on the Emergency Response Team requiring periodic 24 hour on-call rotation.

• Serve as an SH&S representative in cross functional and departmental projects and lead internal SH&S initiatives.

• Demonstrate competent negotiation skills when dealing with challenging situations.

• Establish a positive rapport with staff, scientists and management to ensure a high level of customer service.

• Serve as a primary point of contact for customer groups.


• B.S. in basic science or engineering is required (degree in engineering is preferred).

• Proficiency in safety engineering with 6+ years of experience.  Experience with process safety in a large-scale manufacturing environment.

• Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT and other related EH&S regulations, codes and guidelines.

• Demonstrated implementation of SH&S programs in a research and development environment.

• Demonstrated success with leading management and peers without authority.

• Self-starter and able to apply experience to new situations without detailed instruction.

• Ability to multi-task, effectively shift priorities and work at a rapid pace is required.

• Strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to influence others across multiple functional areas (including senior management).

• Strong focus on customer service.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills Preferred:

• Experience with Process Chemistry, Formulation and Analytical Operations in Biotech/Biopharma or related industry.

• Knowledge of Process Safety Management.

• Certification such as PE.
