Development Laboratory Systems Product Director

Now is an exciting time to join the R&D Tech organization and drive a step change in technology strategy and delivery. The Product Director is a key role in this mission and is accountable for increasing value, improving flow and enhancing quality for their respective product group, in alignment with the R&D strategy, and across different R&D lines and departments. The Product Director has end-to-end accountable for the products within their product group and manages the product lifecycle. The Product Director will maintain 3-year product roadmaps that align to the R&D strategy and are based on a deep understanding of the end-user needs and business processes, and are based on consultation with key stakeholders. The Product Director will manage a persistent DevOps team and will be responsible for Agile ways of working including reviewing and managing the product backlog, estimating value and prioritizing delivery for the products in their domain.

Specifically, the Product Director for Development Laboratory Systems will have accountability for all GxP laboratory systems used across the CMC development groups and the Phase 1 clinical trial study center, drug substance and drug product pilot plant data systems, as well as any collaborative Tech activities with Pharma Supply Chain related to Tech Transfer, and general support for laboratory instrumentation across research and development. This will include GxP eLN and LIMS systems, and production data collection and analysis. This role will partner closely with the Biopharm and Cell and Gene Therapy Product Directors to leverage and deploy the core development systems into those domains as appropriate, and over time will absorb niche development systems developed into those domains, once they are stable and mature, into the main product group. This role will form a close partnership with the Product Data Domain Lead to ensure core development systems enable the Product Data strategy. Additionally, this role will be expected to form a close collaboration with the Pharma Supply Chain digital leads both in the business and in Tech to exploit the opportunity to have an integrated digital manufacturing strategy from small scale lab, through pilot plant and into manufacturing.


Key Responsibilities:
• Strategy: Accountable for developing and executing 3-year product roadmaps for all products within the product group, in alignment with the R&D strategy and R&D stakeholders. The product roadmaps will be built with a clear focus on value delivery to the R&D strategy and will prioritize investments based on value.

• Product management: Accountable for managing the product backlog and prioritizing all Tech services within their respective product domain, ensuring continuous feedback from business customers and end users. Partner with central Tech platform teams to re-use platform tools within R&D as far as possible.

• Governance: Establish and lead Business Governance bodies, provide oversight and establish business value, manage overall delivery and service performance and manage business risk. Prepare investments in support of the product roadmap for Technology Review Board governance.

• Business Process: Design the optimal set of products and services that meets the business strategy and requirements.

• Quality, Risk & Compliance: Accountable for ensuring all products supporting the business are compliant with internal security, risk management policies and practices, external regulatory and statutory requirements, and that R&D Tech continuity plans are in place for all business-critical products.

• Service Management: Accountable for ensuring the right services levels are in place and maintained in line with business need and the appropriate responses made to Voice of the Process (VOP) and Voice of the Customer (VOC). As products mature ensure an effective hand-over to the Established Products group.

• Process Improvement: Accountable for driving ongoing product and business process improvements, adopting a mixture of waterfall, hybrid and agile methodologies as appropriate.

• Change & Release management: Manage change activity, including Software-as-a-Service delivered change, into the production service in a compliant and efficient manner.

• Integrations: In collaboration with Solution Architecture, ensure that data integrations are efficient, accurate and secure. This also includes building reporting capabilities that support both operational reporting as well as analytic reporting.

• People Management: Accountable for line managing of the persistent team supporting the product group and ensuring ongoing succession planning to maintain business, through a mixture of GSK employees, augmented/contingent workers and strategic suppliers.

• Degree, relevant (e.g. R&D, Commercial, Corporate, GMS) experience and / or exposure to product management in a major global IT organization.
• Track record in successful IT strategy development, solution design, programme and project delivery and service management, across multiple business lines.
• Track record in delivering business impact through process and IT enabled solutions, across multiple business lines.
• Experience of Agile and DevOps
• Experience of vendor management.
• Excellent relationship management, strong influencing and communication skills at senior level.
• Deep content knowledge of specific domain.

Preferred qualifications:
• Master or PhD - Business Administration (MBA), Information Technology
