Director, Software Development

As our Director, Software Development you will be responsible for owning the code asset for the Global Applications & Development Team as part of GSK Tech, and you will need to define and drive the strategy for all custom development and enhancement to standard programs for any application used globally across the business groups that GA&D supports. All development needs to be:

a) Aligned to the overall strategic direction for GSK and the GSK overall operating model
b) Integrated into end-to-end process flows: driving alignment across multiple sites and functions to deliver value to the end customer
c) Aligned to all relevant policies, procedures and regulatory standards
d) As simple as possible and as complex as necessary aligned to VFQ principles
e) Structured to enable the adoption of simplified, standardized IT systems (especially SAP systems), minimizing customization and maximizing the adoption of embedded good-practices
f) Aligned to other internal and external best practices and digital ways of working

Key Responsibilities:
1. Own delivery of development solutions for all Global Application & Development systems particularly those pertaining to the ERP/SAP
• Provide digital technical skills/resources for design, development & support of solutions
• Liaise with strategic partners to ensure that suitable resources are available, with a focus on developing offshore capabilities, and maintaining them in teams to ensure continuity where possible

2. Own the support services for all custom development
• Establish and provide support for new implementations
• Manage the interaction between the delivery teams and the support teams in both directions to ensure that issues discovered in support are integrated into delivery procedure to avoid the same mistakes being repeated

3. Define the strategy for the development of software and ensure that it is followed and applied.
• Ensure that the development design process is consistent across all development teams and that existing knowledge is leveraged during new design.
• Ensure that all code developed is as good as possible and reviewed to ensure continual optimisation is delivered.
• Partner with Core Tech/Platforms to be leading the future skills required for GA&D Software Development - Cloud, new languages, open source development
• Partner with strategic supplier(s) to ensure capability is available to GA&D when required

4. Minimise bespoke development
• Ensure that any business needs that drive a requirement for customisation of standard application code are strongly challenged
• Monitor the level of customisation to drive a lower level of bespoke code whenever possible to minimise the maintenance debt and risk to the products during future upgrades

5. Ensure compliance to standards
• Provide the top-level code and design strategy to ensure that all code is of high quality
• Ensure compliance to standards for review of technical design and build provided by strategic supplier groups
• Ensure that solutions provided by suppliers are in line with guidelines for quality and audit compliant.

6. Ensure development follows current best practice code development processes.
• Explore new processes to ensure that GSK development maintains pace with the leading practises in software development.
• Research and learn about new technologies that could benefit GSK and drive the adoption of these new practises and technologies when appropriate.

7. Learn and utilize Agile/VFQ methodology - apply to development and become champion of VFQ to GA&D.
