REPORTING TO: Database Team Manager

KEY TECHNOLOGIES: Oracle database, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL/MariaDB

SUMMARY

At Hargreaves Lansdown, our database systems underpin our mission critical client facing infrastructure.

The database administrator role is a key role within the IT department.  The role is responsible for the effective management and maintenance of the databases that underpin our most valuable asset – our client data.

The ideal candidate for the role is someone that has a deep technical knowledge of a number of database technologies and is methodical with a cautious approach to work.  The candidate should also have good communication skills and be able to articulate technical concepts in a simple and straightforward way.

This role is suited to an individual who enjoys owning a problem but also working with other teams to resolve it.  As well as providing day to day support during normal business hours you will be expected to take part in our on-call rota.  Due to the nature of the role there will also be some out of hours work expected.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Responsible for the ongoing maintenance, security, and availability of Database infrastructure based on business requirements and adhering to tight operations, security, and procedural models.
  • Troubleshooting complex problems finding root causes and putting long term fixes in place.
  • Provide technical assistance to other teams.
  • Implementation of system changes
  • Increase efficiency within the team through automation and process improvement.
  • Work with architecture and project management teams to help design and deliver change to the business
  • Provide day to day support and advice for our database platforms.
  • Manage changes to the databases including validating that proposed changes will not introduce issues.
  • Ensure that adequate monitoring is in place so that we know about problems ahead of an issue occurring.
  • Take part in the on-call rota to ensure there is adequate cover.
  • Take ownership of projects and ensure timely delivery.
  • Respond to and resolve complex incidents and problem tickets.
  • Ensure systems and processes are documented.
  • Communicate with all levels of the business to help present new ideas and provide recommendations for new technologies.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS

Essential experience

  • Oracle 12c/19c Administration (RMAN, query optimisation, database design, RAC, data guard)
  • SQL Server 2014+
  • Strong SQL skills
  • 3 years’ experience as a DBA
