UNIX Systems Engineer

About the role

At Hargreaves Lansdown, our Linux and UNIX based systems are the backbone of our mission critical client facing infrastructure. Due to the increasing demands we are now looking to increase the size of the team. An average day will be diverse and present a wide variety of tasks that you will be involved with that would be typical of a system administrator.  To name a few; ensuring that the systems are maintained and managed in line with best practice, resolve service affecting issues, implement changes to the systems, build new systems and environments, and providing technical guidance to other teams.


A key part of the role involves delivering change to the business using a continuous improvement workflow, this is achieved using configuration management tools to configure new component and change existing infrastructure and therefore candidates with an interest in coding will have an advantage. This role is suited to an individual who enjoys not only owning a problem but working with other teams to resolve it.  As well as providing day to day support during normal business hours you will be expected to take part in our on-call rota.  


Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the ongoing maintenance, security, and availability of Systems infrastructure based on business requirements and adhering to tight operations, security, and procedural models
  • Troubleshooting problems to help find and fix root causes
  • Provide technical assistance to other teams
  • Implementation of system changes
  • Operating system patching and maintenance
  • Respond to and resolve incidents and problem tickets
  • Create documentation in line with our standards and ensure consistency of our documentation
  • Provides guidance and work leadership to less-experienced staff members
  • Implementation/update of new/existing software to meet the needs of the business
  • Work with our in house development team to help maintain and change our internal platform as required


Essential Skills & Experience:

  • 5 years’ experience as a system administrator working on Linux or UNIX based systems
  • Experience of working in a zero downtime environment
  • Demonstrate a high level of technical expertise to support complex Unix Systems across all tiers
  • Linux Administration (Centos or Redhat)
  • Solaris 10 administration
  • Apache HTTPD Shell scripting (bash, python, perl, or ksh)
  • Good numerical skills
  • Organised
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively manage your own workload

Desirable Skills & Experience:

  • Degree educated in an IT related discipline
  • Relevant IT professional qualification such as RHCSA, RHCE
  • Understanding of virtualisation technologies e.g. VMware
  • Configuration management systems (e.g. puppet/chef)
  • Source control software (e.g. Subversion, Git) 
  • System monitoring (e.g. Opsview / Nagios)
  • Experience in a Financial Services environment
  • Experience in an environment governed by PCI-DSS
  • Strong communicator (written and verbal)
  • Ability to analyse and problem solve
