Catastrophe Risk Research Analyst

Guy Carpenter, a leading international reinsurance broker, is looking for a Catastrophe Risk Research Analyst to join its London office and support catastrophe risk research operations. This position will be part of the Guy Carpenter CAT Risk Studio (CRS) group, a small, entrepreneurial team building innovative applications in the area of catastrophe risk modelling. We are looking for analytical thinkers with a passion for applied research to join our interdisciplinary team. The Analyst will report to the CRS Research Manager and will work closely with colleagues to support CRS activities worldwide.

The Analyst’s primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Perform research and collect scientific datasets pertaining to natural hazards risk (including but not limited to: Earthquakes, Tropical/Extra-Tropical Cyclones, and Floods)

  • Process raw data into digestible and compatible formats

  • Communicate scientific concepts, methods and results to technical & non-technical audiences

  • Develop critical understanding of risk modelling methodologies

  • Design and implement methodologies for evaluating catastrophe risk models

  • Pursue and maintain relationships with third-party scientific researchers

  • Maintain current knowledge of research updates in the field of catastrophe risk

  • Contribute to development and expansion of CRS’ web app suite through collaboration with software developers

  • Meet with clients to present Guy Carpenter views on catastrophe risk and to understand clients’ interests

  • Co-author scientific papers

A successful candidate will possess:

  • A degree in the natural sciences, engineering, or similar technical background (master’s required, PhD a plus)

  • Excellent analytical skills

  • Ability to program independently in a technical language such as R, Python or MATLAB (Essestial)

  • Provable ability to problem solve and communicate clearly

  • Excellent writing skills and documentation discipline (published scientific papers preferred but not required)

  • Experience contributing to applied research

  • Ability to work in a formal, global business environment Familiarity with web programming, internet systems, and/or web design a plus

  • Scientific curiosity and eagerness to learn about the application of science in insurance

Location - London

Travel - Some travel may be required

  • Coordinates a network of 20+ research institutions that provide scientific information on natural hazards and risk around the world

  • Deploys its research, knowledge and advice through modern internet-based web applications and by providing traditional consulting services

  • Advises our reinsurance and insurance clients on financial risk arising from these catastrophes by leveraging our research and web applications

  • Also heavily involved in the design of parametric insurance solutions, such as CAT bonds and other Insurance-Linked Securities
