Senior Manager Chemistry

Summary-

The position will manage the chemistry group in Tissue Research and Early Development (tRED) to support the development of immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization detection systems. The Senior Manager will be responsible for the direction, planning and development of novel technologies in the areas of technology transfer to various development groups, securing of new chemicals and materials, analytical chemistry, troubleshooting of chemistry related problems in manufacturing, implementation of new technologies and adaptation of such to various research and development projects. The manager will direct efforts in synthesizing rare reagents and providing materials to internal and external tRED groups. Efforts will be directed to the generation, characterization and application of chemical/biochemical compounds for future research reagents to support the development of in vitro diagnostic tests.  Sets goals and standards for the team and is responsible for creating an environment which supports rapid and efficient technology maturation towards successful product development. Works in tandem with the Senior Director of Chemistry and Analytical Methods to target technology development for specific market segments and develop short and long term technology and product strategies. May also have functional area responsibility for one or more disciplines in the product development and/or project/program management area.

Responsibilities-

Initiates, directs and executes scientific efforts in the area of synthetic organic, oligonucleotide, and/or bioconjugate chemistry.

Directs bioconjugation chemistry and analytical chemistry efforts to support assay development based on new and existing methodologies, developing, establishing, and validating testing methodology used to control raw materials, production intermediates, and final products.

Collaborates with Senior Director of Chemistry to insure efficient discovery process of new technologies and transfer of such to various development groups.

Insures timely patenting of RTD intellectual property and collaborates with Senior Director of Chemistry in timely documentation of data.

Utilizes new or existing methods for identifying and determining the structure of novel compounds, including validation and documentation of all processes. Directs analysis and evaluation of material and products at all stages of development process.

Oversees testing of analytical samples for the laboratory area, the separation and characterization of candidate compounds, formulations development, peptide synthesis, protein modification, and nucleic acid synthesis.

Makes major contributions to all areas which need chemistry expertise, such as, surface chemistry, formulations and raw material specifications

Monitors the competitive landscape and assists in bringing to new and useful technology for development.

Assists Senior Director in staff training, maintenance and upkeep of Staff Training Documentation, Health and Safety issues, implementation of compliance at Roche and national level

Assist in hiring process, preparation of departmental budgets; assists in monitors department spending.

Assists in directing departmental staff including: interviewing and hiring staff, providing performance feedback and reviews, counseling, developing, rewarding, completing progressive disciplinary and terminating

Establishes overall program direction and goals, and direction of resources toward completion of those goals.

Establishes and maintains program milestones and timelines.

Management of the program critical path and contingency planning.

Communication with other product development teams to share information and help implement standard product development practices across the company.

Provides open environment and promotes teamwork during the development process.

Responsible for motivation and development of all personnel within the program or functional area.

Monitor work to ensure quality, and continuously promote Quality First Time.

Qualifications-

Required: Bachelor's Degree

With BS in relevant discipline. 12 or more years of progressive work experience demonstrating increased

competencies. Experience in the following functions or combination thereof: instrument product design/development, instrument or reagent systems integration, chemistry/reagent design/development, project management and/or marketing management of new products. Experience performing in a leadership capacity. Technical project management experience preferred.

Preferred: Master's Degree

With MS in relevant discipline. 10 or more years of progressive work experience demonstrating increased

competencies. Experience in the following functions or combination thereof: instrument product design/development, instrument or reagent systems integration, chemistry/reagent design/development, project management and/or marketing management of new products. Experience performing in a leadership capacity. Technical project management experience preferred.

OR

Ph.D.- With PhD in relevant discipline. 8 or more years of progressive work experience demonstrating increased

competencies. Experience in the following functions or combination thereof: instrument product design/development, instrument or reagent systems integration, chemistry/reagent design/development, project management and/or marketing management of new products. Experience performing in a leadership capacity. Technical project management experience preferred.
