Job Summary:

The Walt Disney Company's Media & Entertainment Distribution (DMED) is a new, global business segment for The Walt Disney Company with the mission of providing consumers around the world access to the content they want most, on the latest platforms, at a time of rapidly-evolving consumer habits. Combining the Company's direct-to-consumer streaming services – ESPN+, the Disney+ streaming service and its ownership stake in Hulu -- alongside Disney's international media businesses, DMED aligns cutting-edge technology with world-class content and beloved brands to expand the Company's global footprint and deliver highly-personalized entertainment experiences to diverse consumers around the world.



The Disney Media and Entertainment (DMED) Communications team is seeking a Director of Communications to join the team. This position will report to the VP of Communications, based in Glendale. The Director is responsible for strategic communications for the segment team, spanning all four key DMED businesses: Direct to Consumer, Theatrical Distribution, Networks and Ad Sales.



This individual will lead a small team of communications professionals, and will be responsible for developing and leading world-class communications efforts, crafting and executing plans that express the division’s vision, brand and position through media relations, executive communications, social responsibility, and issues management.



We are looking for an experienced communications executive that will work closely with internal stakeholders including the segment’s Chairman, and external media partners to enhance and uphold the integrity of the DMED brand and reputation in alignment with our Company values.



The ideal candidate has strong media relationships across tech, business, and consumer publications; deep executive communications experience; and proven ability to partner collaboratively with cross-functional stakeholders to identify and develop corporate narratives and execute high-impact communications programs. 



The right person for this role is deeply familiar with, and has a passion for communications and entertainment, is an expert storyteller and a strong writer.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategic, data-driven DMED communications plans that enhance and uphold the integrity of the DMED brand and reputation in alignment with our Company values.
  • Establish the division’s vision, brand and position through media relations, executive communications efforts, while aligning with enterprise priorities.
  • Establish a centralized analytics, competitive reporting, and industry news monitoring approach.
  • Build and execute communications plans related to DMED Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy focused on the consumer, suppliers, vendors etc.
  • Maintain media relationships to proactively advance DMED/TWDC business strategy and shape stories.
  • Create DMED CSR strategy in line with TWDC approach that builds reputation for our platforms, streaming services and international media business.
  • Develop holistic DMED narrative for the segment
  • Establish macro DMED Exec Comms strategy to position leaders with industry partners, employees, and media.
  • Collaborate with TWDC Investor Relations and DMED Finance team on segment earnings narrative.
  • Oversee speaking engagements (internal and external) for chairman and other key executives when needed that enhance their position as leaders in the industry.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience in corporate communications, PR, journalism or equivalent and experience leading teams
  • 3-5 years of experience leading a team
  • Ability to partner across a matrixed organization, and take into account the needs of multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of info into compelling, actionable insights
  • Familiarity with recent political, cultural and social issues impacting global landscape
  • Attention to detail, highly-organized with creative instincts and an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Must be a self-starter, team player with a genuine enthusiasm for communications and public relations
  • Creativity, diplomacy, and ability to juggle heavy volume of diverse projects, including both strategic and tactical assignments
  • Possesses in-house corporate communications experience, communications experience in government, or agency experience
  • Deep experience in issues management and crisis communications
  • Strong verbal and writing skills, with demonstrated ability to effectively and rapidly deliver information in a complex, multi-business global company

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications or related field
