Principal Counsel – Privacy

The Corporate Legal – Privacy Team is a part of The Walt Disney Company’s (“TWDC”) world class Legal Department. The Privacy Team provides privacy and data security legal advice to TWDC’s businesses around the globe in all varieties of cutting edge contexts, including new and advanced technologies, advertising and marketing, content distribution, and product development, operation, and distribution. TWDC’s commercial success depends on a direct trust relationship with our consumers, employees and partners. The Privacy Team’s mission is to ensure that privacy expectations of TWDC’s consumers, employees, and partners are met and that their privacy is adequately protected, while helping our businesses deliver the entertainment, information, inspiration, and magic that is Disney.

We are seeking an experienced attorney to advise on a wide range of privacy issues for new and emerging digital platforms, technologies, and products, as well as traditional and immersive offline experiences. The Principal Counsel must have a strong working knowledge of global privacy and data security laws, rules, regulations, and self-regulatory guidelines; the ability to work closely and effectively with product development, operations, IT Security, data science, marketing, and other teams on compliance with privacy laws and other requirements; and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of the overall Privacy Team.


  • Advise on global requirements for collection and use of consumer data in a variety of contexts and products, including new and emerging products and business models.
  • Advise attorneys and non-attorneys on legal, regulatory and policy developments related to privacy, data security and advertising and marketing disclosures, including interpreting new proposed and enacted laws/regulations and anticipating their impact on TWDC.
  • Collaborate with business clients and Legal Department colleagues on creative solutions to complex privacy and data governance challenges.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Privacy Team to share ideas and best practices, and ensure that clients across TWDC obtain consistent advice.
  • Advise, draft, and negotiate privacy and data security terms in contract negotiations with internal and external service providers and vendors.
  • Support company response to potential cybersecurity incidents.
  • Work directly with business and legal colleagues throughout TWDC, both domestically and globally in several TWDC business segments.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in strategic roles in government, corporate or professional services settings and an understanding of privacy and data security issues implicated in various types of settings/products/technology, including digital/online products and offline experiences.
  • Ability to analyze new and emerging technologies/practices/products, anticipate potential privacy and data security issues that could be implicated, and counsel clients effectively consistent with or in the absence of directly applicable laws, rules, regulations, or standards.
  • Strong drafting, negotiating and writing skills, including attention to detail, as well as the ability to solve problems in an efficient, business-friendly manner in time-pressured situations.
  • Ability to identify and analyze complex issues and devise creative solutions and strategies for resolution.
  • Ability to anticipate and understand risks and impacts contractual provisions and agreements may have on a client’s business.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to professionalism and ongoing learning/improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively and inclusively with co-workers and clients.
  • Willingness to take “ownership” of projects and think proactively.

  • Superior organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, and prioritize workload efficiently and effectively.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with developing and implementing privacy and data security policies and procedures.
  • Experience with monitoring legal compliance with privacy and security requirements.
  • Experience with cybersecurity, data security and incident response.
  • Experience providing legal services to international teams.

Required Education

  • JD or equivalent
  • Strong academic credentials
  • Member in good standing of at least one state bar and willingness and qualification to be registered In- House Counsel in CA, NY, or D.C. depending on work location.
