Technical Director - SaaS Delivery

Summary of Role

Willis Towers Watson’s Insurance Technology business is a recognised leader in providing risk modelling, decision support, process orchestration and governance solutions to insurers globally. We are looking to strengthen our delivery of scaled software services by appointment of a Director of SaaS Strategy delivery with responsibility for the delivery, operation and support of advanced insurance software services.

What you will do….

  • Work with senior product leaders to develop the vision and prioritise the elaboration of that vision delivering our long-term SaaS Strategy

  • Build and run teams that will translate that SaaS vision into a core SaaS architecture

  • Build and run DevOps centric teams that will deliver stage one proof of concepts to realise our SaaS vision based on the architecture

  • Build and run a full DevOps delivery team working alongside our existing product delivery teams, that will take those proofs of concept and turn them into real-world services, products or systems.

  • Build and run a DevOps delivery organisation that will build on those core services to deliver new products in our evolving SaaS space, such as advanced analytics and machine learning services

  • Work closely with our existing Product Family Leadership Teams to ensure that existing product engineering is coordinated with our SaaS strategy and has a consistent evolutionary pathway to coalesce with our future SaaS ecosystem.

  • Work closely with key suppliers and partners such as Microsoft to ensure that our technical strategy concentrates on efficient use of industry leading capabilities as well as on our own development expertise

  • Ensure that we focus on high quality repeatability and predictability in evolving our technical SaaS strategy

  • Act as the core SaaS decision maker for technical strategy realisation and escalations 

The Role


How you will do it…


  • Elaboration of the SaaS strategy into something we can then start to build

Product Delivery

  • Work with key stakeholders to agree and prioritise the technical roadmap for the team.

  • Contribute to the prioritisation of the Insurance Consulting & Technology roadmap.

  • Ensure a delivery focus is maintained and work with your team to highlight issues, dependencies and risks to plans and give effective reporting of progress.

  • You will understand integration patterns and how to design not only individual systems, but how to connect and make those systems work together

  • Create clear and accurate programme parameters including scope, schedule, budgets and specifications

  • Contribute to and review significant technical design, technology choice, and architecture decisions to ensure that the most appropriate solutions are being designed and built.

  • Ensure fit for purpose engineering practices and pipelines are in place for each technical service / product within the team.

  • Actively develop our DevOps approach to delivery as we elaborate on and build out our technical strategy.

  • Manage the overall requirements, design, development, quality and release of software solutions.

  • Ensure quality throughout the delivery lifecycle using our core technology principles as a guide.

Service Delivery

  • Work with the Service and Operational Management functions within Insurance Consulting & Technology and across the business to design operational process, systems and services.

  • Work with the Service and Operational Management functions within Insurance Consulting & Technology  and across the business to ensure a strong focus is maintained on service quality and reliability.

  • Integrate our emerging DevOps culture with wider Insurance Consulting & Technology  delivery, support, operations and consulting teams.

  • Establish and own out-of-hours support rota's for critical services.

  • Manage third party software/service providers to ensure products are fit for purpose, are delivered to a high quality and represent value for money.

  • Ensure appropriate SLAs and relationships are in place with these suppliers.

  • Advocate the right metrics for the team – technology KPIs, velocity, quality and service delivery and ensure appropriate reporting is issued to key stakeholders.

Strategy & Communication

  • Strong communication skills to participate in product innovation and planning meetings at board level to discuss the technology roadmap.

  • Support the Product team in effective communication of the roadmap and progress against business plans, including the technology strategy objectives, to your team and other stakeholders.

  • Own and evangelise the team’s technical strategy, and ensure we are making the right decisions. 

  • Align those decisions to the strategy set for Insurance Consulting & Technology by the Technology Leadership Team.

Governance & Planning

  • Ensure effective management strategies for internal & external risk and threats are appropriately prioritised.

  • Ensure Technology decisions are represented within coordination and steering groups.

  • Own the security and compliance position for your team, and drive for engineering excellence.


  • Leading the people managers within the core team to understand how to energise people, thinking about motivation, performance, learning and development.

  • Working to understand the skills and people needed for the team.

  • Attract and hire key talent and support your team in hiring the best people.

  • Work closely with Product Families to To identify and fulfil roles and opportunities emerging  in our SaaS evolution

The Requirements

  • Strong technical understanding of core SaaS principles and architectures

  • Full lifecycle experience in delivering and operating a portfolio of advanced software products at scale and delivered as SaaS.

  • Experience in leading the evolution of product technology from legacy architectures to an effective SaaS model.

  • Deep understanding of the pitfalls and issues that arise in adopting and adapting to the design and delivery of SaaS product and delivery models.

  • Ability to liaise effectively with and direct and influence architecture, development and operations teams

  • Ability to communicate effectively at board level.

  • Ability to communicate across multiple product families, teams, stakeholders and organisational levels

  • A passion for enabling new products will be crucial

  • Practical, hands on experience of developing and delivering several large-scale, long-term projects.

  • Experience delivering new B2B revenue streams in a product and multi-cloud / SaaS environment.

  • Experience in the Insurance industry would be advantageous
