WorkPride Panel: How Can LGBTQ+ Employees Spot Pride Within the Workplace in 2021

Having support and resources available from the organizations can sometimes be a stepping stone for employees to finally open up and be their authentic selves at work. But now that everyone is working from home, the scenario might look slightly different.

In this panel, we will have an overview of how employees can reach out to different colleagues, managers and teams in the organization to find out if there is already an existing network or ERG for Pride and how they can benefit from it. Additionally, we will cover how an existing network or ERG for Pride can boost motivation and inclusivity in a remote work scenario.

Future of Work + Place Programme Lead & Network Co Chair
    Santander UK
In my day job I focus on leading a number of critical workplace experience programmes for Santander, looking to answer the questions of how we work, where we work, and why we work. In my gay jobs (ha!) I focus on ensuring I am vocal about the needs of the entire LGBTQ+ community, and use my platforms to raise awareness of those parts of the community that need it most - these days that feels like my trans, non binary and ethnic minority siblings who day in and day out are facing far more hurdles than white cisgendered LGB communities are, and we're already facing a lot! In terms of what I get up to, I'm a person who likes to keep busy; I Co-Chair Santander's LGBTQ+ Employee Network, I chair the Board of Trustees at Q:alliance (a Milton Keynes based LGBTQ+ focused registered charity), I sit on the Communications Strategy Committee for OUTstanding, I was on the organising committee for Pride:MK 2019, I help run the online social media group "Support LGBTQ+ Businesses" - and with what spare time I have left I narrate wlw fiction audiobooks on Audible, Amazon & iTunes, because there simply wasn't enough representation in this area when I was growing up and I want to help change that! Lucky for me I have a very understanding, and VERY supportive wife. I'm always happy to help people and pass on whatever life wisdom I may have gained so far on this rock. I'm also very keen to listen to and learn from other people's stories. We aren't equal until we're ALL equal.

Originally born and raised in Malaysia, I have been fortunate enough to experience living and working in the USA, Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong. My formative years as a gay young adult and exposure to LGBTQ+ activism began during my university days at San Diego State University. After that, I moved back to Malaysia to embark on my first career in management consulting with Accenture; with that move back home, in the most literal sense, I went back into the closet. It was quite detrimental to my mental health, not being able to be my authentic self both at home and work for about 2 years back in Asia. My saving grace came via a gay professional connection and I was recruited into the financial services advisory body of EY Hong Kong. It was in EY Hong Kong that I first stepped up to help form and grow the UNITY (EY’s LGBTQ+ employee group) and received a lot of guidance from out and proud gay leaders. Being in Hong Kong, naturally, due to the massive scale of HSBC, I was providing advisory services to and eventually joined HSBC. My life adventure resumes with my move to London in 2019 through an opportunity with HSBC.
