WorkPride Panel: The How and Why to Becoming an Executive Ally

A feeling of inclusivity and belonging is crucial for workers worldwide to feel good about themselves, especially now that we spend so much time at home and away from each other. Initiatives that foster a communal way of doing things can go a long way in attracting and retaining top talent, namely when such talent comes from the LGBTQ+ community.

Executives have an important role in building a strong culture of inclusivity through allyship. This panel aims to include a variety of executives who will discuss how they drive inclusion within their organizations, as well as how allyship has had an impact on their career progression.

    Area International Premier Relationship Manager
    HSBC
Since graduating Newcastle University in 2008 I have worked within the HSBC group. My early career was customer facing, based in a branch as a meet and greet/customer services officer. Around 10 years ago I progressed into management within the bank. I spent time developing the M&S Bank in store proposition (part of the HSBC Group), launching our flag ship branch in Marble Arch London. My career then progressed to running high profile/high net worth branch’s of HSBC in central London. With the success of my work with High Net Worth clients I progressed to our International Premier team. This involves looking after the groups most valuable customers who have relationships in multiple geographies. Helping to run a team of over 30 people. Along side my day role I have been an active committee member of HSBC Pride for a decade and running Pride UK for the last 2 years. In this role I help to steer the conversation within HSBC on how to build inclusion for our LGBT+ colleagues and our LGBT+ customers as well. This role has resulted in me working on multiple projects, from delivering a trans guide, a 15 day ally challenge and the strategy for our Pride March’s. Through this role I have been able to help other firms set up their employee resource network groups, allowing them to build successful programs within their own companies. I truly enjoy both of these roles, as I feel that both of them help people to be at their best and help the community around us.
