A new map has been created by a transgender activist outlining the risks of anti-trans legislation in the US.
Created by activist Erin Reed, an independent reporter and content creator, the map provides a breakdown of anti-trans legislation in all 50 US states, according to ‘UK Daily News’.
With more and more trans people concerned about their own safety due to increasing anti-trans legislation in the US, the new map allows users to quickly find out if their home state is a safe option.

“Every day I get messages from concerned people wondering how to assess their risk of staying in their home state,” Erin Reed said in a statement on her website.
“I created the legislative risk map specifically to answer that question. It is now more than ever a question that needs to be answered for so many transgender people who are facing forced medical detransition, bans on the use of our names, pronouns and identification documents and many other restrictions on our right to exist in public life.”

Reed explained that in the past two weeks the risk of anti-trans legislation has increased in many states.
Those states are under close scrutiny, Reed said, as anti-trans laws are consistently passed but rejected. Some have anti-trans governors aiming to implement various discriminatory policies, similar to those found in the most unsafe states for trans people.
“All of these states are at risk of joining the ranks of the ‘worst states’ in terms of anti-trans laws,” she said.
“That doesn’t mean trans people can just rest in them — states can rush through bills, as we saw last week in places like Iowa and Kentucky, both of which rushed through gender-affirming grooming bans.”

“These states have already passed the worst anti-transgender laws or enforced existing anti-transgender laws,” she added.
“The worst laws appear in these states. Texas is home to the Armament of DFPS against trans people and 34 anti-trans bills proposed this cycle. Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Dakota, Tennessee and Utah have also enacted gender-affirming childcare bans on trans youth.”

In bright blue, Reed has highlighted the states that are safest for trans people to live in. With improved health policies and protections, these areas are the most desirable for the majority of trans people in the country.
“Transgender people are culturally and legally better protected in these states than in other states. States like Hawaii, Colorado and Washington maintain explicit transgender health policies that cover surgeries that are often not covered in other states,” she added.
“Washington, D.C, Massachusetts, Connecticut and California are considering or have adopted policies that protect transgender refugees fleeing other states.”
