Australian envoy summoned by Iran over LGBTQ+ celebration in Tehran embassy
News
On Tuesday, Iran called in the Australian ambassador over the release of photos from an event at the embassy commemorating Australia’s LGBTQ+ national day on September 1, as reported by the state-operated IRNA news agency.
IRNA stated that the foreign ministry summoned Ian McConville, the Australian ambassador to Tehran, condemning the social media release of the photos as offensive and against Iranian and Islamic culture, as well as international standards.
In response, McConville asserted that Australia had not insulted Iran or its culture and noted that there was no mention of Iran in the Instagram post.
According to ‘AP News’, on Monday, the embassy shared a photo of McConville and his team dressed in colourful attire, stating, “Today, and every day, we’re dedicated to creating a supportive environment, where everyone, especially LGBTQIA+ youth, can feel proud to be themselves.”
