‘Babadook’ to Get Special Rainbow Blu-Ray Release for Pride

Australian horror film and inexplicable “gay icon”, The Babadook is getting a special rainbow Blu-ray release for Pride, reports Entertainment Weekly.

The film, which is about a terrifying monster that stalks a single mother and her child, became an unexpected internet meme three years ago when Netflix accidently placed it in the LGBT+ section of the website.

The Babadook has since become a mainstay at Prides, with many people dressing up as him in marches.

“I’m still trying to work that one out… It’s quite perplexing,” said Jennifer Kent

“I feel it’s really quite beautiful, but I still have no idea why.

“I guess he’s an outsider of sorts… it’s funny. It’s charming, I think, that the gay community has latched onto it.

“It’s really sweet. He’s trying to prolong his life, he’s trying to stay relevant.”

To celebrate this bizarre meme, the film’s distribution company is releasing a limited edition of the Blu-ray with a special rainbow cover. Proceeds of which will go to the Los Angeles LGBT Centre.

“Thanks to the unpredictable world of social media, viral videos and passionate fans, The Babadook became an unexpected and embraced LGBTQ mascot in 2017 and even carried over into last year as well,” a synopsis explains.

“This year, we fling the closet doors open even further to cement his status!

We’ve created a special release with participation from our fine partners at IFC Midnight: an official limited edition and numbered Pride Month-themed slipcover packaging that will be shrink-wrapped over our existing Blu-ray release.”

Only 2,500 are being made.
