Barbie honours International Women’s Day with new ‘Inspiring Women’ line

Mattel is giving Barbie a make-over in honor of International Women’s Day. Two new lines of dolls are being introduced: the “Inspiring Women” line which features influential women from history and the “Shero” line which features contemporary women who are doing incredible work in their respective fields today.

The Inspiring Women line features doll versions of Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart, and NASA mathematician Katheryn Johnson. While the “Shero” line features dolls of Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins, Olympic snowboarder Chloe Kim, and Australian wildlife conservationist Bindi Irwin.

Marissa Beck, a Mattel spokesperson, said these new dolls are meant to inspire: “The (new Barbies) pay tribute to incredible heroines of their time; courageous women who took risks changed rules, and paved the way for generations of girls to dream bigger than ever before.”

The new lines come after a survey showed 81% of mothers were concerned about female role models for their daughters. Barbie senior vice president Lisa McKnight said this was definitely a step in the right direction for the veteran company: “We are thrilled to shine a light on real-life role models to remind girls that they can be anything.”
