Caitlyn Jenner will deliver the keynote speech for Channel 4’s Diversity Lecture to House of Commons

Caitlyn Jenner has been asked by Channel 4 to deliver the keynote speech to the UK’s House of Commons on diversity. Every year the filmed event chooses a prominent public figure to bring light to issues of diversity, previous speakers have been Riz Ahmed and Idris Elba – both talked about the lack of racial diversity on UK screens.

A spokesperson for Channel 4 explained the decision: “The aim of the Channel 4 Diversity Lecture is to raise awareness and stimulate public debate about diversity issues.

“Caitlyn Jenner is one of the most high profile transgender people in the world and her transition brought transgender issues into the mainstream, helping to stimulate debate and increase awareness.”

Jenner is a somewhat controversial choice. Her vocal support for the Republican party and Trump during the 2016 election was criticised by many in the LGBT+ community.

She has later admitted that “as far as trans issues, this administration has been the worst ever. They’ve set our community back 20 years, easily. It’s going to be hard to change, but we’ve been through these types of things before and we’ll continue to fight it.”
