Cameroon president’s daughter hints at same-sex relationship

The president of Cameroon’s daughter has posted a picture showing her kissing another woman, stirring varied reactions in a country where same-sex relationships are outlawed. The Instagram image exhibits 26-year-old Brenda Biya embracing Brazilian model Layyons Valença.

“I’m crazy about you & I want the world to know,” Ms. Biya captioned the post, accompanied by a love heart emoji. Her father, 91-year-old President Paul Biya, assumed office in 1982 and stands as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.

Engaging in same-sex activities or relationships in the Central African nation can result in up to five years of imprisonment. Ms. Biya, also known as King Nasty, did not overtly reveal her sexuality when sharing the kissing photo.

Nevertheless, subsequent to the picture’s publication, Ms. Biya shared an article from Le Monde where the newspaper suggested she had “come out.” According to ‘BBC’, she also posted messages from supporters, including trans Cameroonian activist Shakiro, who viewed Ms. Biya’s act as potentially transformative for the LGBTQ+ community in Cameroon.

Shakiro, currently residing in Belgium after pursuing asylum due to a conviction for “attempted homosexuality” in Cameroon, commended Ms. Biya for her advocacy for social change where entrenched taboos prevail.

While some laud Ms. Biya, a musician residing abroad, others in Cameroon responded to her post with homophobic remarks on social media. Questions have arisen regarding whether Ms. Biya intended to stir controversy with her post, given her history of provocative social media content.

Debates also circulate about whether coming out is a luxury afforded only to a privileged few in the country. LGBTQ+ activist Bandy Kiki expressed support in a Facebook post, noting the discrepancies in how anti-LGBTQ+ laws in Cameroon disproportionately target the less affluent.

Human rights organisations have condemned Cameroon’s stringent laws against the LGBTQ+ individuals. In 2022, Human Rights Watch called on Cameroon to repeal the discriminatory law promptly and safeguard the human rights of all citizens, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Renowned human rights lawyer Barrister Alice Nkom, known for defending LGBTQ+ individuals in Cameroon, hailed Ms. Biya as a beacon of bravery for conveying an essential universal message of love.

Though most Cameroonian media outlets have not covered Ms. Biya’s recent post, the media regulatory body has a history of penalising publications and broadcasters for depicting homosexuality. The government, including President Biya himself, has not officially commented on the matter.
