Canada To Allow Trans Student Athletes to Compete on Teams Aligning with Gender Identity
Canada is set to allow transgender student athletes to compete on the team that aligns with their gender identity, reports the Vancouver Sun.
The rule allows all trans athletes to do this, even if they have yet to start hormone therapy.
“These kinds of policies are important declarations of support and assurance and inclusivity,” said Kai Scott, who is a principal partner at TransFocus Consulting. Although he criticised the policy’s lack of non-binary awareness.
Scott has instead suggested that sports be divided into other categories besides genders, like muscle mass, hormone level or weight.
The new rule has been supported by The University of British Columbia, which has said they wish to create “inclusive and safe environments.”
