Church Of England Apologises Over Guidance That Sex Is Only For Married Straight Couples
Last week the Church of England issued a statement declaring that sex is for straight married couples only and now top archbishops have apologised for that guidance.
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Archbishop of York John Sentamu said in a statement that they took responsibility for last week's announcement, “which we acknowledge has jeopardized trust.”
“We are very sorry and recognize the division and hurt this has caused," Welby and Sentamu wrote.
An open letter of more than 3,000 people, including 800 members of the clergy, described the guidance as “a laughingstock to a nation that believes it (the church) is obsessed with sex.”
According to ‘Gay Times’, Welby and Sentamu, explaining the reasoning behind the initial guidance, added: “At our meeting of the College of Bishops of the Church of England this week we continued our commitment to the Living in Love and Faith project which is about questions of human identity, sexuality and marriage.
“This process is intended to help us all to build bridges that will enable the difficult conversations that are necessary as, together, we discern the way forward for the Church of England.”
