Colorado Becomes First US State To Issue Intersex Birth Certificate

Colorado has issued an intersex birth certificate to Anunnaki Ray Marquez, becoming the first US state to do so, reports Patch.

Marquez identifies as a gender non-conforming androgynous gay man, and is intersex. This means that he has a variation of hormones, chromosomes, and secondary sex characteristics that can’t be categorized as either male or female.

After months of protest and petitioning, Marquez now has “intersex” written on his birth certificate instead of male or female.

“Here’s the thing that confuses people: My biological sex is intersex. We live in a world that thinks that should be in alignment with my gender identity,” Marquez said.

“But my gender identity doesn’t match: it’s non-conforming, androgynous male. My sexual orientation confuses people even more. If I have an intersex body, they get confused when I say I’m gay.”
