Jiří Navrátil, a Czech MP of the Christian Democrats party, is now the country’s first member of parliament to come out as gay, English Radio writes.

In an interview for Seznam.cz, Mr. Navratil spoke openly about his sexuality and criticized the discrimination faced by members of the LGBTQ+ community in this country.
He was prompted to speak out by the recent murder of two gay men in Slovakia. The tragedy led to several protests in the Czech Republic where several thousand people gathered on Prague’s Wenceslas Square on Wednesday (October 26) to raise their voice and protest against homophobia and calling on the government to take more action against hate.
They blamed the Czech and Slovak governments for dragging their feet in giving LGBTQ+ people equal rights, which they say fueled prejudices and hatred against them.
Navrátil said that while he believes the Czech Republic is ahead of Slovakia when it comes to LGBTQ+ rights, “even our society is becoming very radicalized in certain cases.”
