DC Restaurant Fined $7000 For Refusing to Let Trans Person Use Bathroom

A restaurant in Washington DC has been fined $7000 for refusing to allow a trans woman from using the women’s restroom, reports Newsweek.

Charlotte Clymer, an activist and Human Rights Campaign employee, was asked to leave Cuba Libre Rum Bar and Restaurant in June of last year after attempting to use the women’s bathroom.

A male attendant asked to see her ID before using the bathroom, she was then asked by the restaurant manager to show her ID again, then told to leave when she refused.

The restaurant has now agreed to pay a $7000 fine for violating the DC Human Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on a person’s gender identity or expression.

The restaurant must now provide “policies and employee training” on trans issues for its employees.

“The District’s laws reflect one of our residents’ most deeply-held values: that all people should be treated equally,” said Attorney General of the District of Columbia Karl Racine.

“With this settlement, Cuba Libre is required to maintain policies that will ensure this type of discrimination does not happen again.

“I want to thank the restaurant’s management and staff for cooperating fully in our investigation and seeking to rectify their wrongdoing.”
