Ellen Page: “I Would Be Thrilled If I Only Played Queer Roles”
In a recent interview, actress Ellen Page, who came out as a lesbian in 2014, said she would be “thrilled” to only play queer roles for the rest of her career.
The actress was asked if the industry acceptance for LGBT+ professionals has evolved since she began working and although she acknowledged that progress has been made she also stated: “There’s just so far to go. You would never ask a heterosexual actress that, as being typecast as straight. Why would I not want to play those roles? Quite frankly, I would be thrilled if it’s every role I ever played again!”
Page also added the felt pressure to hide her sexuality early on stating: “I came out when I was 27 years old. Like, what? I wasn’t talking about who I was and being my authentic self because I was an actress in Hollywood. That’s absurd. We need to look at these things as absurd.”

In the past years, there are a few straight actors who have gone on to win Oscars for playing an LGBT+ character. Yet, no openly gay actor has won the Oscar for Best Actor.
