First Trans Assemblywoman Elected in Japan
Ayako Fuchigami has become the first transgender person to be elected as an assemblywoman in Japan, reports the Mainichi.
Fuchigami won the local election in Sapporo’s Higashi Ward districton the island of Hokkaido.
“I am representing minority people who face many difficulties every day. I feel the weight of their burden on my shoulders,” she said.
“We just want to live a normal life. I want to create a society where opinions from diverse people are reflected.
"I want to return the favour to those who have supported me by working hard to create a society in which LGBT can be active.”
Fuchigami is endorsed by the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan.
