‘Friends’ Actress Says She’s Proud to Have Played Such an “Iconic Gay Character”

The actress who played Ross’s lesbian ex-wife Carol in Friends has defended the show for some of its homophobic and transphobic storylines, saying she was proud to play the character.

Talking toTodayJane Sibbett said: “We were never poking fun at being gay. We were poking fun at a person who didn’t get it, who was uncomfortable with the concept of us being together. And that was the great beauty; the great truth in that the joke’s on the other people that don’t get it, that this is all about love.”

Jessica Hechtwho played Carol’s wife Susan said she loved playing “an iconic gay character.”

Sibbett also revealed that when the show aired several US states would not show the episode that featured the couple’s wedding, and that they were forbidden from kissing on screen.

In recent years Friends has come under fire for some of its less-than progressive episodes, most notable the episode that featured Chandler’s transgender father.
