Gay And Bi Teens Are Five Times More Likely To Be Sexually Assaulted, New Study Suggests
Gay, bisexual and questioning teens are more likely to be victims of abuse from their parents and romantic partners, a new research paper published in ‘JAMA Paediatrics’ has revealed.
The research looked at data collected by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) from surveys of 29,000 teens, aged between 14 and 18 years old, conducted for 2015 to 2017. Researches saw a “striking” difference in the number and rate at which LGB teens are the victims of abuse, compares to straight teens.
The report indicates that gay and bisexual boys were five times more likely to have been victims of sexual assault that straight teens while over one in 10 LGB teens reported being victims of romantic partner violence.
Theodore Caputi, the lead author of the study who works with the Health Equity Research Lab at Harvard Medical School, said that the violence constituted a “public health crisis.”
“Unfortunately, physical and sexual violence are commonplace in the daily lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and questioning adolescents,” he said, according to ‘LGBTQ Nation’.
