German Health Minister Introduces New Law Banning Gay Conversion Therapy
Germany will ban all forms of gay conversion therapy thanks to a new law introduced by German Health Minister Jens Spahn, reports the Magnus Hirschfeld Foundation.
“My position is clear: homosexuality is not an illness, which is why it does not need to be treated,”said Spahn, who is openly gay and married.
“I would very much like to have a bill this year that could then be presented to parliament.”
It is estimated more than 1,000 people are subjected to conversion therapy each year in Germany. They often include humiliating practices from family members, and therapists, with prayers and even exorcisms.
Some psychologists have been known to use electro-shock therapy and testosterone injections.
