GLAAD: Gay Representation in Media is Up
The annual Studio Responsibility Index from GLAAD has been released, tracking the percentage of LGBT+ characters in film and television in the US.
Of 110 major films released there were 20 featured LGBT+ characters. 55 percent of those films featured either a gay man or lesbian, while 15 percent featured a bisexual person.
Overall, LGBT+ representation was up from last year’s all-time low of 12.8 percent (this year was 18.2 percent).
However, there were no trans characters featured in any major release this tear – despite representation in such TV shows as Pose and Supergirl.
“We know that inclusion is both the right thing to do and good for the bottom line,” said GLAAD’sDirector of Entertainment Research & Analysis, Megan Townsend.
“Audiences supported stand out LGBTQ-inclusive wide releases last year with both their dollars and social buzz. Nielsen found that LGBTQ audiences are 22 percent more likely to see a theatrical release more than once.
“The studios should recognise the power of LGBTQ moviegoers and the desire for stories that reflect ourselves, and create and market more films for this audience who is ready to buy tickets.”
