‘House of the Dragon’ star Bethany Antonia comes out

April 23, 2024

On Saturday, Bethany Antonia, star of ‘House of the Dragon,’ shared a racist message she received on her Instagram story and subtly revealed her sexuality by stating she was “gay too.”

Antonia portrays Princess Baela Targaryen in the series, which delves into the rule and civil war of House Targaryen, set long before the events of ‘Game of Thrones.’ Historically, Targaryens have been portrayed as white with blonde hair, and the casting of Black actors in these roles has faced some racist online trolling. The offensive message Antonia received was prompted by the latest trailer, which teased this season's contenders for the throne in ‘House of the Dragon.’

The message Antonia posted on her IG story was shockingly blunt: “N****, you look like a piece of s***. It's a miracle they even included you in the trailer. But we don't care. I hope you accidentally die on set.”

Antonia, who was featured in two episodes in the first season and will appear in eight episodes in the upcoming season, humorously captioned her response, “Wait till they find out I'm gay too” accompanied by a clown face emoji. Additionally, the UK actress shared another story showing her smiling, with a caption stating: “Y'all won't ruin this first glimmer of dragon joy for us negroes.”

It is not confirmed if the actress, known for her upcoming role in ‘Hallmark's Sense & Sensibility (2024),’ has previously come out; this appears to be her first public acknowledgment of her sexuality, ‘Pride’ writes.

Throughout the weekend, many of Antonia’s 57.6K Instagram followers expressed their support in response to the offensive message.

One user declared, “You're the most perfect Baela there could EVER be!!!” alongside a white heart emoji.

Another fan expressed their excitement: “can’t wait to see you in House of the Dragon again!!!!!”

An additional supporter comforted Antonia, saying, “We love you, Bethany! I’m sorry for the DMs you’ve gotten but you are so beautiful and talented and that person is just pathetic.”

On Twitter (X), numerous fans of Antonia’s portrayal of Princess Baela Targaryen contributed messages of support to overshadow the negativity she faced for her role in the series.
