How Can Allies Help Create an Inclusive Workplace?

We spend so much of our lives at work and if you are not able or comfortable to bring your true self to work then it can be extremely difficult to contribute fully to your role and company. As an ally, I believe it is everyone's role and responsibility to foster and nurture an inclusive work environment.

There are many things as I believe as an ally, we can do to ensure inclusivity. To start and one of my most important is to never assume, never assume or presume you know anyone's personal situations. Everyone is on a personal journey and assumptions shouldn't be made or based on stereotypes.

Another key element in building inclusivity within your workplace is communication. Starting a forum or open safe space for people to connect and learn about the LGBTQ+ community or any other group is integral. In our company we are proud of our Pods of Difference, we have various PODs that celebrate our differences. They are made up of our employees, anyone can join, and they are responsible for educating our colleagues on a variety of different topics. For example, during Pride, our Pride POD runs sessions, hosts guest speakers, and celebrates the diversity that our Pride POD brings to our company.

As allies we must also be aware of our own behaviors and the language we use, it is not censorship but by using inclusive language and making everyone feel welcome can really boost team collaboration and creativity. It is important for leaders especially, to foster a culture of acceptance and equality. Ensuring everyone is truly evaluated and recognized for their work performance and not based on things like common interests or backgrounds.

It is so important to take steps to create an inclusive working environment. Small steps can be made to make a big impact and lead to positive changes in all areas both in business and wider society. See what you can do in your company and be an ally of action.
