How to be a better networker

1.  Get off the computer

Yes, we get the irony, but look at our events page, find something you’re interested in, and go! Adding someone on LinkedIn is all very well and good, but meeting in person is more memorable and has more impact. Networking events are perfect for this.

2. You get what you give

Everyone who networks has an agenda, but that doesn’t mean you go around recycling the same pitch about yourself over and over. Try and offer something to someone – a contact, a job post, advice or even mentoring – and you’ll be surprised at what you get in return.

3. Follow up with everyone you meet

Great, you got that business card, now do something with it. After you meet someone, especially at a networking event, it’s easy to get lost in the shuffle. Send them an email the next day – or even better, a phone call. Find out if you can grab a coffee or a drink, or if there’s anything you can do for them.

4. Be yourself

As cliché as it sounds, this is often the best advice. People can sense when you’re trying to hard to impress them, and it will turn them off. Relax, be yourself, and you’ll be memorable in your own way.

5. Be strategic, and realistic

Pick your targets at networking events wisely, understand the bigger more important people won’t have much time for you so have realistic expectations.

Building a personal network won’t happen overnight, it will take time and effort, but don’t give up, and keep persisting.
