HSBC To Start Paying For Trans Staff's Treatment

November 13, 2022

HSBC will start paying for its trans staff's treatments from next year.

The banking giant said employees, their partners, and their dependents aged 18 to 21 can apply to have their gender confirmation surgeries paid for.

The bank's UK Pride team sent an internal memo earlier this week informing them of its new “gender dysphoria benefit.” The email from the HR department also encouraged staff to be their “true authentic self.”

According to the Daily Mail, it will cover diagnosis, mental health treatments, hormone consultation, speech therapy, hair removal, and surgery for workers.

The organization said it defines gender dysphoria “as a person who doesn't align with their biological sex and is a recognized medical condition.” HSBC has prided itself on its stance on diversity issues including marching at the London Pride parade for the first time in 2015 and revealing two rainbow-painted lions at its Hong Kong headquarters in 2016.

HSBC said: “By providing access to gender affirmation treatment, we hope that our trans and nonbinary colleagues and their dependents are able to be their true authentic self.”

NatWest said earlier this year it would fund private non-surgical hormone treatment for its transgender members of staff in a bid to make the bank a more inclusive employer. In 2017 it announced it would offer customers ten different titles, including Mre, an abbreviation for and Msr – a combination of Miss and Sir. The bank said the titles “allow people who don’t identify as a particular gender, or who don’t want to be identified by gender, to choose the title that works for them.”
