Iconic gay bookshop in London vandalised
Gay’s The Word, one of the last remaining brick-and-mortar LGBT+ bookshops in the world, was vandalised early Sunday morning. The iconic London bookshop has resided in King’s Cross the last forty years and was the meeting place for the Lesbians and Gays Support The Miners, a 1980s LGBT+ activist group that was portrayed in the 2014 film Pride.
The shop’s main windows were all smashed in, resulting in nearly £500 worth of damage. “We see it for what it was,” Uli Lenart, the shop’s manager said. “We immediately boarded it up and then got a new window put in. It didn’t stop us [selling books] for a single second.”
After hearing about the damages a visiting author stopped by the shop and donated £100. “It was a really lovely moment,” Lenart noted.
Lenart added that attacks like these are unfortunate, but do happen intermittently: “Although 99.9% of the time things are harmonious, we should be conscious of these incidents and we should all keep an eye on each other.”
