Illinois Governor Signs Executive Order Protecting Trans Youth

Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois has signed an executive order protecting young trans people, reports the Chicago Tribute.

The new order aims to safeguard young LGBT+ students’ rights. Schools will be given instructions on how to be “affirming and inclusive for transgender, nonbinary and gender nonconforming students.”

A 25-person task force will also be created to help the state board of education promote LGBT+ rights in schools and establish procedures around names, correct pronouns, and dress codes.

The taskforce will release their first report in 2020.

“Ending the intolerable levels of discrimination and violence against our transgender community starts here—in our schools—by making the values of tolerance and respect just as much a part of our educational cultural as academics, athletics, and the arts,” said Lori Lightfoot, the openly gay mayor of Chicago, who has present at the signing of the order.

Lightfoot added she was “humbled by the incredible support and optimism that has been infectious all over our city.”
