International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2023

Laura Zieth's, Commercial Manager at Zimmer Biomet, shared with us her thoughts to mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science this year!

"For me, representation has to be at all levels.  During my education, females were represented, however more so in the “softer” biological sciences.

Physics, chemistry and engineering continued to be male dominated.  When I entered the workforce, I felt the same bias with business.  Women often fell into support roles but the directorships, management and finance roles were more typically male.

I can see in my two young daughters, that gender is far less of a conversation for their generation.  I make the effort to volunteer at their school and for some of those kids, the first scientist they meet in real life, will be a female.  I also volunteer as a mentor for university students through a fantastic group called Robogals.  Some of the things we talk about is career progression, work life balance, talking about being authentic and using all of the strengths available to you.

For me, being a female in science, means that we embrace diversity in thought.  It means we drive innovative with the experience of many walks of life. It also means in the medical sciences, that our patients are represented with the same diversity and I hope that means we can give them more thoughtful care."
