J.J. Hawkins Cast As First Ever Trans Character On ‘Charmed’
Trans actor J.J. Hawkins was cast in the ‘Charmed’ reboot making him the first-ever trans character in the franchise, including the beloved 90s original.
Hawkins, who uses he/him and they/them pronouns, will play Kevin, a trans male college student who inspires one of the three leads to take on a “formidable opponent”.
As ‘Gay Times’ report, the rising star is best known for his role on CBS’ eight-episode limited series ‘The Red Line’, where he portrayed Riley, the trans-masculine best friend of the main character. He has also made guest appearances on legal dramas such as All Rise, Criminal Minds and CBS.
The ‘Charmed’ reboot features a prominent LGBT+ character in Mel Vera (Melonie Diaz), a “strong-willed feminist” lesbian. Like Holly Marie Combs’ classic character, Piper Halliwell, she can freeze time.
Madeleine Mantock stars as telekinetic eldest sister Macy Vaughn, while Sarah Jeffrey completes the trio as Maggie Vera, whose primary power is empathy.
Although the series initially received mixed reviews – and backlash from original cast members such as Combs and Rose McGowan – it has been a success for the network, with a third season set to premiere in January.
The original series ran from 1998-2006 and also starred Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty, Brian Krause, Dorian Gregory, Julian McMahon, Drew Fuller and Kaley Cuoco.
It made history in 2006 as the longest-running hour-long series with a cast of all-female leads, before being surpassed six years later by Desperate Housewives.
