Jeremy Corbyn Meets with Leader of Anti-LGBT+ Protests

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has stoked controversy for meeting with a hardliner Orthodox Jewish activist who has been one of the leaders against LGBT-inclusive education in schools, the Jewish Chronicle reports.

Corbyn, along with wife Laura Alvarez and shadow international development secretary Dan Carden met with Shraga Stern yesterday (July 17).

“These LGBT lobbies have come in to the education system. We parents must stand up for our rights and we must fight for our freedom… to educate the children the way we were educated,” Stern has said in a Facebook video protesting the ‘No Outsiders’ programme.

“When the debate about inclusive education is provoking division and anger, and increased attacks on LGBT+ people it is disgraceful that the leader of the Labour party would knowingly engage with someone with these views,” the group, LGBT Labour, said in a statement.

A Jewish Labour Movement spokesperson added: “It’s a shame that the only representatives of any part of the Jewish community that Corbyn is prepared to listen to are those from its most reactionary sections.

“Shraga Stern has been an inveterate campaigner against children being taught that LGBT people exist. His views and tactics do not represent the vast bulk of the Jewish community.”
