Julie Bowen Was “In Love With A Woman”
November 7, 2022The Modern Family may identify as straight, but that doesn't mean she's closed herself off to the possibility of something romantic transpiring with a woman.
Julie Bowen confessed during an interview with Becca Tilley on Monday's episode of her podcast Quitters that she once had an unrequited crush on a member of the same sex. “I'm straight. I've always been straight,” she began, before adding, “I was in love with a woman for a while, but she didn't love me back. She liked women, but she didn't like me in that way.”
Bowen noted that because her feelings weren't reciprocated, “It never really took off so I never really had to challenge my concept of my sexuality.” According to Vanity Fair, Bowen made this revelation while discussing the feeling that everyone needs to label their sexuality. “I hope people don't always have to come out. What you do with your body should not be the first thing we know about people, or care about – that's your business.”
Tilley went public with her relationship with pop star Hayley Kiyoko in May. She “never thought about a label” regarding her own sexuality. “Hayley and I met and we just had this instant connection,” she said. “I fell in love with her so fast that I never went into this like, ‘What does it mean? What is my label?’ For me, I'm just attracted to people.” The Bachelor actor said, “I don't have an issue with coming out. I just hope that one day people don't have to come out, because it causes a lot of stress and weight added. Life is already really hard, falling in love should just be a natural, beautiful thing people shouldn't have to explain to anybody.”
Earlier this year, Bowen proved that the heart wants what it wants when she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres show. She said she had an unrequited crush on Harry Styles. Guest Host Adam DeVine mentioned that the Emmy winner had attended the pop star's Fine Line tour in November, adding, “Word on the street is that you have a little bit of a crush, girl.”
“You're asking me if I'd come out of [dating] retirement for Harry Styles? Oh, hell yeah. Him? Look at him!” The actor added, “He's got that same energy that Twitch does where they're so gorgeous and sexy, but there's so much joy that you don't feel dirty about what's happening in your pants. He's just bringing the joy and the light and the ‘Watermelon Sugar.’ You just feel good about the whole experience.”
Bowen admitted that since her 13-year marriage to Scott Phillips, a real estate investor, ended in February 2018, she has been “very single.”
