Laverne Cox becomes the first trans cover girl of Cosmopolitan
by Tim Gibson
Laverne Cox, breakout star from Orange is the New Black, makes history as the first trans woman to grace the cover of Cosmopolitan. In a special “Say Yes To Love” issue, released this February in South Africa, Cox poses in front of rainbow iteration of the Cosmo logo. The magazine has said they want to show support for the LGBT+ community and that this issue will “explore the need for increasing visibility with regards to various forms of gender identity and sexuality.”
Cox has said she is “so honoured and proud to cover the February issue” and in a video interview accompanying the magazine has pointed out the need for trans visibility. “As a black transgender woman, I’ve often been kept a secret by the men I’ve dated. So when my ex-boyfriend introduced me to his dad and invited me to spend Hanukkah with him and his family, it was the most special thing ever. Trans women deserve to be loved out in the open and in the light.”
