LGBT+ Campaigners Protest Criminalisation of Homosexuality in Singapore With Light Show

Thousands of protesters took part in the annual “Repeal 377A” event in Hong Lim Park in Singapore over the weekend (June 29), reports Singapore Times.

The protest, organised by activist group Pink Dot, seeks to highlight issues of discrimination faced by the LGBT+ community in Singapore including the fact that gay sex is still prohibited under Section 377A of the country’s Penal Code.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien recently said that there no plans to reform the Penal Code and that it would remain “for some time”.

“It has been a decade and yet our leaders seem to be selective in their listening when it comes to the discrimination that LGBTQ people face every single day,” said Paerin Choa, a spokesperson for Pink Dot.

“We continue to be made invisible and marginalised in Singapore where we are denied respect and dignity by the laws and the policies of this country.”

Protestors held up a series of huge lights to spell out “Repeal 377A”.

“We are here to say that we are not going away and that we deserve a place in society,” said one of the attendees, Garry Moss.
