LGBT+ Groups Sue Trump White House Over Discrimination in Healthcare

Various LGBT+ groups are suing the Trump White House for scaling back discrimination protections in healthcare. These new laws would allow healthcare workers to turn down medical care to patients if it interfered with their own religious beliefs.

“You have the right under Federal law to decline to perform, assist in the performance of, refer for, undergo, or pay for certain health care‐related treatments, research, or services….that violate your conscience, religious beliefs, or moral convictions,” the new guidance from the Department of Health and Human Service reads.

Lambda Legal, Americans United and Center for Reproductive Rights are among the groups who have filed a lawsuit at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against this new guidance.

They claim the Trump administration are advancing “specific religious beliefs in violation of the First Amendment [and violating] patients’ rights to privacy, liberty and equal dignity as guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment.”

“The breadth of the harm this new rule will cause is impossible to exaggerate, and opens up yet another front in the Trump Administration’s assault on civil rights of minorities and already marginalised, vulnerable populations,” said Lambda Legal senior attorney Jamie Gliksberg.
